
How to Actually Pick the Right Infrared Heater for Your Bathroom
When you’re looking at infrared heaters, it’s tempting to just grab the one with the biggest number on the box. But here’s the thing: more power isn’t always better. If you go too small, you’ll be shivering in the shower waiting for the room to warm up. Go too big, and you’re just throwing money away on your electric bill—or worse, you’ll burn out the components because the unit is working too hard in a tiny space.
Finding Your Sweet Spot
It really comes down to how much space you’re trying to heat. If you’ve just got a tiny powder room (under 4m²), a 400W to 600W lamp is plenty. It hits you instantly. For a standard family bathroom (5-8m²), you’ll want to step up to 800W or 1200W. Now, if you have one of those massive master baths with high ceilings, you might need a few 1500W units. Otherwise, all that lovely heat just hangs out at the ceiling while your toes stay freezing on the tile. The cool part about shortwave infrared is that it doesn’t bother heating the air. It goes straight for you and the walls. That means you feel that “warm hug” the second you step in, even if the air in the room is still a bit crisp.
The Waterproofing Trade-off
Since this is a bathroom, water is the enemy. That’s why we use IP65-rated gear. It means the housing is sealed tight against dust and splashes using tempered glass and heavy-duty gaskets. But there is a catch. The tighter the seal, the harder it is for the heater to “breathe.” If you cram a high-wattage lamp into a tiny, sealed box, the internal wiring can get way too hot. To keep things safe, just make sure your mounting bracket leaves a little bit of breathing room around the chassis.
Saving Money (and Energy)
You don’t need to blast one giant heater on a low setting. That’s just not efficient. Instead, try a “zoned” approach. Put in a couple of lower-wattage lamps and hook them up to a timer or a motion sensor. That way, you aren’t paying to heat an empty room. One last tip: check the “heat cone.” Make sure the lamp’s focal length matches your ceiling height so the warmth actually reaches the floor where you’re standing.
